DESCRIPTION:<p>Dear members and friends of Pax Christi</p>\n<p>On Sunday 9<
sup>th December Pax Christi Victoria celebrates 45 years of working
for peace at our final gathering for 2018.</p>\n<p>We have never been alon
 e.  We have been and remain players in a much wider peace movement\, many
peace movements old and new and many individuals.</p>\n<p>We are inviting
all past and present members of Pax Christi to join us but we are also inv
iting representatives of our partner movements who have been and continue
to work with us.  We hope that people how can’t join us would like to send
a message. We will spend some time reflecting on some of the campaigns an
d the people involved over the past 45 years and develop into a conversati
on on where the peace movement is now and where it might go in the future.
There are many experiences to share and we hope you can come and share yo
ur own memories and hopes. Also bring pictures and other memorabilia. We a
re anxious to make this an event for as wide a representation of the peace
movement as possible so we would really value you participation.</p>\n<p>
N.B. We anticipate a relaxed conversation rather than a formal meeting</p>
\n<p><em>We begin with a shared lunch at 1 p.m. ( bring some food to share
. Heating facilities available\, and aim to finish by about 4.15 with the
“cutting of the cake.”</em></p>\n<p>Hope to see you then</p>\n<p>Harry</p>

ary Crumlin is an art curator\, historian and consultant in contemporary a
rt and spirituality and in its intersections with Liturgical Art in Painti
ngs and Churches. Her life (art\, writings\, books\, religious commitment)
revolves around the intersections between her own questions and those mir
rored in the changing faces of contemporary art. She has been a consistent
advocate for artists\, including indigenous artists and their art.</p>\n<
p>Some of her books and exhibitions include: Images of Religion in Austral
ian Art (1988)\, Aboriginal Art and Spirituality (1991)\, Beyond Belief: M
odern Art and the Religious Imagination (1998)\, and most recently\, The B

in Victoria and feels passionately about this sacred place.</p>\n<p>Approa
ch<br />\nRosemary’s way of entry is always through the ‘half-open door’ –
the work of art itself\, and\, the experiences which participants bring\,
and their diverse ways of their seeing. She writes\,</p>\n<p>“Images and
seeing are at the heart of this shared experience. I hope to respect this.

DESCRIPTION:<p>René Girard has been called “the new Darwin of the human sci
ences”. His insights into the origins of violence are sheer gift to our mo
dern world.</p>\n<p>This course will be an exploration of some of his thou
ght\, with personal and global application. It will investigate aspects of
human imitation which show how we are all interdependent. The consequent
realities of rivalry\, scapegoating\, sacrifice and violence will be explo
red using Girard’s work in various disciplines\, including literature.</p>
\n<p>Particular attention will be given to the Gospels\, the discovery of
which changed Girard’s life. The course will offer opportunities to apply
his insights to various parts of the scriptures\, particularly to the pass
ion and resurrection of Christ. As a result of the Christ event\, there is
underway an evolution of human consciousness\, which involves a slow but
relentless growth in understanding the nonviolence of God. Girard recognis
ed in this the call to humanity to imitate God\, as seen in Jesus.</p>\n<p
 >Case studies in interpreting current events in the light of Girard’s insi
ghts will provide practical features to the course. Susan draws on her lif
e’s work in areas of Social Justice.</p>\n<p><em>Nobody will be turned awa

people of West Papua.</p>\n<p>Susan gained a PhD studying the relationship

e for an independent foreign policy”</strong></p>\n<p>The conference is be
ing held at a time of increasing contention between the US and China in ou
r region with the US practising to invade islands in the South China sea u
sing its new Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO). The US Marines
claim this strategy will be difficult for China to counter. Recently the
US practised this strategy by “capturing an island le Shima off the coast
of Okinawa. By designing the US-Australia Talisman Sabre war exercises thi
s year (11-24th July) to further practice this strategy off/on
the coast of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef area\, the US is drawin
g Australia into its hostile intentions aimed at China. The HMAS Adelaide
and Canberra have been fitted out to support amphibious landing operations
and in recent exercises\, US marines have been imbeded on these Australia
n naval ships. In addition\, the US has increased its contingent of US mar
ines in Darwin this year to 2\,500. We don’t want Australia drawn into ano
ther US war.</p>\n<p>The future looks ominious. This issue will be address
ed at the conference together with  IPAN’s National Campaign to end the st
ationing of US troops in Darwin.</p>\n<p>In addition\, the conference will
explore:</p>\n<p>*Why Australia needs an independent foreign policy</p>\n
<p>* The extent of foreign military facilities in Australia and their purp

Professor Joseph A. Camilleri OAM</strong></p>\n<p>This will be a mix of
lectures /interactive discussions with guests followed by an innovative wo
rkshop to develop new approaches to conversation and dialogue.</p>\n<p>The
digital age now intrudes into every facet of modern life – information\,
 communication\, recreation\, study\, work\, shopping\, economy\, politics\
, and more. The challenges it poses are immense – from cyber bullying to ‘
big brother surveillance’\, loss of privacy and autonomy\, erosion of demo
cratic processes\, loss of cultural and personal identity\, cyber warfare\
, and more.</p>\n<p>It affects all of us who have leadership roles\, wheth
 er as parents\, educators\, mentors\, citizens\, policy makers\, and the c
hallenges will increase in coming years.</p>\n<p>How we handle these chall
enges will go a long way to determining how effective we’ll be in our ende
avours to secure a convivial human future.</p>\n<p>Looking forward to welc
oming you and your friends and colleagues to what should be a stimulating
 exchange of views\, information\, and ideas.</p>\n<p>BOOK <a href='https:/

 g for Meaning and Purpose</strong><br />\nTuesday 3 September\, 6.15pm to
8.30pm (doors open at 6.00pm)</p>\n<p>The word ‘spirituality does not mean
organised religion. Nor is it limited to spiritual practices\, such as me
ditation. Rather it suggests a powerful impulse for life shaped by purpose
 \, values\, and perhaps transcendence.<br />\nThe question is: What does s
uch a path mean in the digital age\, especially as the ‘sacred’ is being i
nvoked through digital channels to justify the most heinous crimes?<br />
\nIs there a spirituality that is receptive to mystery\, beauty and wonder
\, yet comfortable with insecurity? Can spirituality accept a dialogue wit
h those who espouse different even opposing beliefs and worldviews? If so\
, what form does it take? And how does it relate to the current technologi
 cal explosion?</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong>Lecture 2: A Cultural Renaissance
 : Realistic Prospect or Just a Pipe Dream<br />\n</strong>Tuesday 10 Septe
 mber\, 6.15pm to 8.30pm (doors open at 6.00pm)</p>\n<p>The extraordinary i
nformation revolution is helping to integrate societies and provides new o
pportunities for many. But with it also comes a loss of uniqueness of loca
 l culture\, a loss of identity\, a sense of exclusion\, and often populism
\, extremism and conflict.<br />\nWhat is the cultural antidote to this tr
end? Can we protect and regenerate local cultures? Is a mutually enriching
dialogue of cultures and civilisations possible? How? Is the ground in Au
stralia more or less fertile than it was 5 or 10 years ago? What are feasi
ble next steps? And what of the most daunting obstacles?</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p
 ><strong>Lecture 3 Politics in the Digital Age. Is There Life After Death?
 <br />\nTuesday 17 September\, 6.15pm to 8.30pm(doors open at 6.00pm)</str
ong></p>\n<p>Politics in Australia and elsewhere is in disarray: political
parties driven largely by short-term self-interest\; parliaments that don
 ’t work\; those in authority\, leaders in name only\; lies and cover-ups t
he order of the day. The end result: a deeply disturbing policy vacuum.<br
/>\nAll this is well known and has been canvassed in previous lecture ser
ies. But there are early signs of ‘new life’. What might these be? How can
they be nurtured? How can we bring them to the attention of a wider publi
c? Are the conventional and social media a help or a hindrance?<br />\nWha
t might be useful communication and action strategies?</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>
